Devon’s famous old cider orchards will be alive with the sound of singing, music and cider drinking this January as local people take part in the much loved and ancient tradition of wassailing.
Wassailing is an ancient ritual which is designed to wake up the cider trees, scare evil spirits away and guarantee a good apple harvest in the autumn. There are a number of special wassailing events across Devon this month where this traditional ceremony, which is believed to date back to Anglo Saxon times, is still observed and enjoyed on 17 January, or old Twelfth Night. ...

North Devon chef Tina Bricknell-Webb from Percy’s is encouraging the British consumer to eat and enjoy more venison this autumn as deer numbers continue to increase in the UK. Visitors to the show will have the chance to learn more by entering to win a three- day inclusive break at Percy’s hotel near Virginstowe for two people. The Ode restaurant situated in the picturesque village of Shaldon near Teignmouth has received the Editors’ award for “Best Use of Local Produce” in the “Which Good Food Guide 2011”....

Devon food producers eagerly await outcome of 2010 Great Taste Awards
When the top prize winners of the 2010 Great Taste Awards are announced in London on 6 September several Devon based businesses will be hoping they will “bring home the bacon” although in their case it is more likely to be cheese, cream or chilli chocolate!
The recently announced 2010 Great Taste Awards included, as always, a large number of Devon businesses. The top award of three stars was given to three of Devon’s top food producers, all of whom now have to wait to see who will be the top prize winners in September....
