Somerset Leisure
Somerset Leisure is a non- profit making leisure trust which is the largest provider of leisure activities in Somerset. The leisure trust delivers a wide range of sports, leisure, learning, health and well being services across 13 leisure centres across the county which are located on shared school sites. It also provides an outdoor activities programme based at the world-renowned Hestercombe Gardens. It promotes health and well being to the local community. As a leading employer in the area the trust works with a strong partnership of education and training providers to deliver skills training for the sports and leisure industry.

1610 heralds a new era in community sport for Somerset Leisure
Somerset Leisure Trust is making its mark with a major new re-brand, 1610 has been selected as the new name for the Leisure Trust which manages 13 leisure centres across Somerset. 1610 was chosen as the exciting new name as it represents the number of square miles in Somerset and while the trust is keen to establish a new, modern and vibrant brand for itself, it still wishes to retain links with its community roots in Somerset.
The change in name also reflects the changing role of the trust as it is now much more than the management of leisure centres. The trust has actively pursued wider ranging community roles by increasing the choice of activities that it provides, from healthy living initiatives, adult learning programmes to workforce development and training for the sports and leisure industry....

New name and a new vision for leisure at Chilton Trinity in Bridgwater
The new two million pounds leisure centre which is being built at Chilton Trinity in Bridgwater is being renamed as Trinity Sports and Leisure, Somerset Leisure Trust has announced. www.somersetleisure.org.uk

West Somerset Sports and Leisure Centre opens its doors to a new gym following £100,000 refurbishment
West Somerset Sports and Leisure Centre in Minehead is to officially open its doors to its new full-time gym following a £100,000 investment by Somerset Leisure Trust which manages the centre. Friday 30th September (4.00pm-8.00pm)
A special opening evening is being held at the leisure centre, which is situated on the same site at the West Somerset Community College at Bircham Rd. The centre formerly shared gym facilities with students from the College and the gym was only available to members of the public for limited hours during the day. But now the new investment means that the leisure centre will be able to open its own full time gym during the day and evening....

Young people in Somerset are being given the chance to train in the sports and leisure industry as Somerset Leisure Trust extends its highly successful apprenticeship scheme.
10 new apprenticeships, which will be on offer to young people in Somerset aged between 16-25, will provide training for up to a year in activity leadership and sports coaching....

Iron woman Karen leads the way to triathlon success at Shepton Mallet
Budding triathletes in Shepton Mallet who wish to take on the challenge of one of the UK’s fastest growing sports, the triathlon, will have the chance to learn more about the sport at Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre next month. The centre, which is managed by Somerset Leisure Trust, is hosting a special triathlon seminar on September 14th which will provide an overview of many aspects of Triathlon, including equipment, training, nutrition, and how to get involved. If the seminar proves popular, there are plans to launch a unique 8-week triathlon training course. The seminar will be led by a fully qualified Level 2 Triathlon Coach.
Centre manager Karen Allum is keen to bring Triathlon to the local community, having recently completed a gruelling ironman distance competition in Nottingham at the end of July (pictured left)....

A sixteen year old fencer who is being coached at Glastonbury Leisure Centre is celebrating after winning the U20 fencing world championships.
Philip Marsh from Bath has just returned from the championships in Jordan where he was the youngest ever winner of the Boys Eptee world fencing title. This is only the second time that a British fencer has won the U20 championship during the last thirty five years. He defeated the former world champion Gaskov from Russia in the semi-finals before beating the Egyptian Alaa El Din in the final....
Glastonbury young people get snappy for healthy lifestyle competition
Children and teenagers in Glastonbury are being challenged to take part in a photography competition to promote healthy lifestyles. This is part of a free health and wellbeing fun day at Glastonbury Leisure centre in April, which is being organised by Somerset Leisure and St Dunstan’s Community School and Arts College.
The competition is aimed at finding the best images of healthy lifestyles from outdoor and sporting activities, growing and cooking healthy food, to happy and healthy moments. The competition is split in to three categories, including children under eleven years old, 11-13 year olds and 14-16 year olds. Entries have to be submitted by March 18th * and selected entries will be exhibited at St Dunstan’s school and at the Somerset Leisure Facebook page. Crewkerne school children “jump for joy” as first gymnastic proficiency centre opens
School children in Crewkerne will be jumping for joy as a new “gymnastic proficiency centre” launches at Crewkerne Sports Centre on Thursday March 3rd.The new facility is the first in a series of gymnastic proficiency centres which are being launched at leisure centres across Somerset, thanks to funding from Somerset Leisure and a grant from Sport England.

“Poster Girl” Genna inspires UK’s young unemployed to get back into work
A 23 year old leisure assistant with Somerset Leisure is a “poster girl” for a nationwide campaign to promote a Government scheme to help young unemployed people get back into work.
Genna Kelsall, is a theatre studies graduate from Martock who works at Stanchester Sports Centre at Stoke-sub-Hamdon near Yeovil as part of the Future Jobs Fund scheme (FJF). She has been selected to appear on a poster which promotes the FJF programme across the UK. The FJF scheme is organised by the National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure which provides young long term unemployed people with valuable work experience and training to help them get a full time job....
