South West tourism attractions are being urged to join forces with their nearest ports to promote themselves to the expanding cruise liner market as Destination South West reports back from a recent trip to the USA. At the beginning of February the team from Destination South West met with senior representatives from Crystal Cruises, Princess Cruises, Cruise Norway, Regent Oceania and several other movers and shakers from the sector.

Destination South West learned that in 2010 a number of tourism attractions in the South West proved a considerable draw for passengers coming in to the 12 ports represented by the organisation. ...

Ilfracombe Harbour secures its place in the Cruise Market with support of Destination South West

Ilfracombe Harbour, the Jewel in the Crown of the North Devon Coast, is set to welcome both the MV Rotterdam and MV Prinsendam cruise ships during early Summer 2011. This will be a first time visit for both ships, and indeed the Holland America Line.

Ilfracombe Harbour Master, Lt Cdr Rob Lawson, says, “We have been members of Destination South West for seven years now, during which time Ilfracombe has tried hard to find its place in the Cruise market and now all the hard work now seems to be paying off. With the 'Hidden Edge' of the Exmoor National Park on our doorstep and the highest sea cliffs in England rising to meet the moor the harbour boasts a very dramatic setting.” ...

The cruise market is an increasingly important one for the South West in 2011 with all eyes looking towards the UK and the forthcoming Olympic Games in just 18 months time. The South West is poised to play a particularly significant role with the Olympic and Paralympics Sailing events staged at Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour and two ambassadors for Destination South West will be making sure that the cruise market knows of the record breaking welcome that awaits it in UK South West ports.

Representatives from Destination South West, who attended the annual Passenger Ship Association Gala Dinner this month, welcomed the news that the ocean cruise market continues to buck current travel trends with an expected increase of 8% in passengers who are expected to have taken a cruise in the next 12 months.

UK ports can look forward to more traffic as the number of British passengers joining their ship from a UK port next year is also expected to rise by 55,000 to 710,000. Many of the passengers from cruise ships visiting the UK’s South West head straight for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, according to Destination South West which recognises the pulling power that these sites exert over visitors to the region.

The UK’s South West coastline boasts access to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Stonehenge, the City of Bath, The Jurassic Coast and the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. Added to these four favourites are The Braunton Burrow Biosphere Reserve near Ilfracombe, the English Riviera Geopark and now, in 2010, the Magna Carta, held at Salisbury Cathedral, which has been added to the new UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register....

Germans cruise into warm welcome from Destination South West

The South West is proving popular with the German tourism market this week as the luxury cruise liner the MV Deutschland enjoys a warm welcome in three of the region’s ports following a campaign by Destination South West to promote the area to the cruise liner industry.

The Deutschland which had 448 passengers on board docked at Portland yesterday (14.9.10), is currently in Falmouth (16.9.10) and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow at St Mary’s in the Scilly Isles (17.9.10)....
