Celebrating English Wine Week, Visit South Devon has announced the winner of its search for a Devon wine to accompany its famous South Devon crab that has its own Festival dedicated to it during the summer. (30 July – 5 August).

The 2010 Sharpham Estate Selection from South Devon Sharpham Estate was pronounced the winner by a distinguished panel of judges with an honourable mention given to Knowle-based Lily Farm’s Brut Sparkling Rosé. Those taking part in the blind tasting of 16 wines from an assortment of producers across Devon included international wine writer Susy Atkins, who is one of the regular wine experts from BBC1's Saturday Kitchen together with Master of Wine Xenia Irwin, local wine merchant Nick Borst-Smith, Ben Foster of Newton Wines, James Dart from Dart’s Farm and Jonathan Woollatt from Chris Piper Wines....

Head for South Devon for the Great Windsor Chair Race!

Some of the UK’s leading craftsmen and designers will be honing their skills in readiness for the Great Windsor Chair Race which takes place at the Contemporary Craft Festival (15 – 17 June) at Bovey Tracey in South Devon. Renowned furniture makers will be competing against one another and showcasing their skills in a competition to make the iconic Windsor Chair.

Famous names in the furniture world such as Chris Eckersley, who last year made a prototype chair named the Devon Chair which has just received a Design Guild Mark from the Furniture makers’ Livery Company, will be competing against Gareth Neal, a highly innovative furniture maker renowned for his use of digital technology. However at this year’s Festival there is a move to get back to basics and use simple hand tools as a challenge to themselves and a reconnection with their materials. The Great Windsor Chair Racers will also be joined by furniture designers Carl Clerkin and William Warren. William has also produced a contemporary Windsor chair with iconic British furniture brand Ercol, who are sponsoring the Race....

This Easter go miniature pig racing in South Devon!

Visit South Devon this Easter and you can enjoy the delights of miniature pig racing at Pennywell Farm at Buckfastleigh. This new venture got its starting orders this week and it has got off to a very promising start. It was nine month old Red Runt who triumphed in the first race. With obstacles like Bacon's Brook and the Trough to contend with the pint sized porkers have to be at the peak of their physical fitness and on sizzling good form.

Pennywell’s owner Chris Murray says, “The pigs have been hamming it up, the visitors have been all out in supporting them and it’s odds on we have a classic activity in the making”....
