1610 is a non-profit making Leisure Trust (formerly known as Somerset Leisure) which manages 13 leisure centres based on school sites across Somerset. The Trust provides a wide range of community based activities from healthy living initiatives, adult learning programmes to workforce development and training for the sports and leisure industry.

1610 aims to help people live fuller richer lives through an active body and active mind.

1610 launches free health week at Exmoor Gym in Dulverton

The Exmoor Gym at Dulverton is to reopen for a week later this month, for a special week long programme of free activities as part of on an ongoing review of services by 1610 leisure trust which manages the facility. www.1610.org.uk

The free health week (28 May- June 1) is being held at the gym which was closed temporarily on April 30 while 1610 carried out a public consultation process about the future sustainability of the gym. The temporary closure was due to concerns about falling gym memberships, but the leisure trust is planning to reopen the facility in September after consulting with the wider community in Dulverton about the best way forward for the gym....

1610 congratulates Glastonbury rising star Josh on British Fencing Championship

1610 is congratulating one of the rising stars of the Glastonbury Fencing Club, Josh Stevens who has just been crowned the U14 British Fencing Champion at the British Youth Championships in Sheffield last weekend. www.1610.org.uk.

Josh who lives locally, has been training at the club at Glastonbury Leisure Centre which is managed by 1610 leisure trust since the age of 7 with the renowned fencing coach Sue Benney. Josh was selected as part of the South West team to compete at the Championships the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield in the U14’s Foil and U14 Epee events. ...

New urban cricket programme launches to bowl over Somerset teenagers

A new “ urban style” cricket programme to encourage teenagers in Somerset back into the sport is being launched by 1610 at four leisure centres in the county. www.1610.org.uk

Powerplay cricket is aimed at 14-17 year olds and it is a quicker “street” version of the traditional game. It is played on multi- sport hard courts rather than on grass cricket pitches and players are expected to hit target zones within the hard court areas as well as run between the wickets to score runs....

Stuart has been selected for the honour of carrying the torch at Lynton in North Devon on May 21 as the torch makes its way around the country. 1610 celebrates outstanding staff and successful apprenticeship scheme

As the Government urges more employers to take on apprentices and to invest in training, 1610 leisure trust has been doing just that in Somerset and has been so successful that 80% of its apprentices have found employment with the leisure trust. Some of those successful apprentices are being rewarded along with other leisure trust staff at a special presentation evening at the new flagship Trinity Sports Centre in Bridgwater on Tuesday March 6. www.1610.org.uk

1610 has been taking a leading role in hosting apprenticeship schemes in Somerset. During the past year 1610 supported 34 Future Job Funded candidates with a 6-month placement and it has also helped 16 of those staff to obtain work through this experience. 80% of apprentices have secured employment at the end of their apprenticeships within the last 3 years with 1610....

The team have just cheered their way to third place in their first ever national cheerleading competition.

2012 heralds new leisure centre for Preston School in Yeovil following £800,000 joint partnership investment

The local community and pupils at Preston School in Yeovil will be celebrating following the announcement of a major £800,000 investment in a new leisure centre at the site which is part of a joint partnership scheme between the school, 1610 leisure trust and South Somerset District Council.

Building work is expected to begin at Preston School next month (08 February) which will include a new fully equipped fitness gym, reception area and a new multi-purpose dance studio as well as refurbishment work on the existing sports hall and changing rooms. The new state of the art facilities are due to open in September and are being welcomed by the Principal of Preston School, Tony Bloxham who believes they will prove to be an inspiration for both pupils and members of the local community to enjoy a more healthy and active lifestyle; “As a community, we are delighted with these exciting developments to our sports facilities. Sport, recreation and leisure are essential elements of life. These new facilities present us with a superb opportunity to develop a love of sport and healthy, active lifestyles in our students from an early age. Somerset Leisure Trust is making its mark with a major new re-brand, 1610 has been selected as the new name for the Leisure Trust which manages 13 leisure centres across Somerset. 1610 was chosen as the exciting new name as it represents the number of square miles in Somerset and while the trust is keen to establish a new, modern and vibrant brand for itself, it still wishes to retain links with its community roots in Somerset.

The change in name also reflects the changing role of the trust as it is now much more than the management of leisure centres. The trust has actively pursued wider ranging community roles by increasing the choice of activities that it provides, from healthy living initiatives, adult learning programmes to workforce development and training for the sports and leisure industry....
