Working 9 -5 – still the way to earn a living?

Posted By: Jane Adkins 06-03-2011

Have you noticed how everyone seems to be smudging the edges of what used to be called the 9 to 5 working week? I used to think that it was just those poor souls who worked for themselves that slaved over a hot computer at the weekend or particularly ambitious-keen-to-impress young executives who burned the candle at both ends - stealing a march on their rivals by continually logging on to their Outlook to read and answer the never ending emails waiting to catch them out. But now I know differently. Now with our Blackberries and our IPhones becoming an additional appendage we all are “on duty” 24/7 – there is less and less of a natural cut off point to the day. Will the concept of weekends become a thing of the past? Or have they disappeared already? Did you do any work this weekend – leave me a comment – but don’t expect me to answer until 9 o’clock Monday morning.

Don't reply to any email sent after 5pm, at least not before 9am the next working day. Problem solved.

When I had a conventional job that I 'had' to do, I would avoid working at weekend at all costs, unless overtime payment involved! But now I love the work I do so don't mind merging the working day with the non!

Being in an 'arts' job my evenings and particularly my Saturdays are the busiest. I love it, but resent the implication by others that must mean I am a 'lady who lunches' the rest of the time. I work b*** hard, but just don't watch the clock or count hours. If you want to do a job well, then it takes as long as it takes.
