North Devon+ congratulates local tourism businesses at Visit Devon Awards

North Devon+ is congratulating local tourism businesses which have scooped prestigious awards at the Visit Devon Tourism Awards 2011 which celebrate the cream of the Devon tourism industry. www.northdevon.com

Wheatland Farm near Winkleigh won Gold in the Sustainable Tourism Award at the glittering awards ceremony at Exeter’s Sandy Park last night which was hosted by the popular BBC Radio Devon presenter Judi Spiers.

Wheatland Farm which is owned by Ian Ripper and Maggie Watson offers eco friendly self catering lodges which are powered by renewable energy and surrounded by 21 acres of lush North Devon countryside. Wheatland Farm was singled out by the competition judges as a “force for good in tourism and using nature to support the local economy and tourism.” www.wheatlandfarm.co.uk

The Calvert Trust Exmoor which offers outdoor activity breaks for disabled people and their carers won Gold in the Tourism Activity, Sport & Experience of the Year. The Trust which is based near Kentisbury is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a huge range of activities from horse riding, canoeing to bush craft and archery. The trust was commended as a role model for other tourism businesses and it was also praised for being an outstanding venue and for providing the holiday of a lifetime for people with learning difficulties and disabilities and their family and friends. www.calvert-trust.org.uk/exmoor

The Big Sheep, the all weather and multi award winning family tourist attraction near Bideford won joint Silver in the Visitor Attraction of the Year category with River Dart Adventures near Ashburton. The Big Sheep was praised for its “excellent customer care and fun approach to providing activities for all the family.” www.thebigsheep.co.uk

Hele Valley Holiday Park near Ilfracombe won Bronze in the Holiday Park of the Year Award. It offers a wide variety of accommodation from holiday cottages, lodges, caravans and first class camping and facilities. It was praised for its “friendly and welcoming staff and attention to detail.” www.helevalley.co.uk
