Bruton School for Girls wins prestigious Cultural Champion Award

Bruton School for Girls was named a Cultural Champion on Friday (30 November) by Arts & Business – the Government-funded organisation set up to foster partnerships between the UK’s cultural and private sectors. The award recognises the School’s outstanding contribution to the arts and its involvement in the 2012 Somerset Art Weeks.

The glitzy awards ceremony, held at Bristol’s Colston Hall, gathered the region’s most influential businesses and cultural groups to celebrate the companies and organisations which are helping arts groups thrive in a tough economic climate.

Bruton School for Girls has long been recognised as having an outstanding arts department, providing excellent facilities and tutelage to its pupils. The school was a lead sponsor of 2012’s Somerset Art Weeks – a two week event exhibiting an exceptional range of work by established and developing visual artists.

Bruton School for Girls has been associated with Somerset Art Works, the company behind the annual Arts Week event, since 2009. The school has sponsored Somerset Art Weeks for the last four years and hosted the launch in 2009. This year the school provided human manikins modelling and wearing art work produced by the students at the high-profile Open Studios launch event, compered by Grand Designs’ Kevin McCloud, at ‘At the Chapel’ in Bruton.

Nicola Botterill, Bruton School for Girls’ Headmistress, said: “We are so pleased to be honoured as a Cultural Champion and delighted that the school was able to lend support to Somerset Arts Week. It’s an incredibly important event, providing a platform to showcase the region’s great artistic talent. We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world where artists can use incredible surroundings to create and inspire their vision. Bruton School for Girls is committed to supporting local arts ventures, while nurturing our own pupils’ artistic talents through dedicated courses, excellent facilities and inspirational teachers.’

Brian Wyatt, Head of Art commented, ‘Bruton School for Girls greatly values the strong relationship it has established with Somerset Art Works and through them with many local artists. The strong link has created many opportunities to extend and enhance the girls’ day to day experience in the studios, and also has supported us in professionally showcasing their excellent work within the wider community. We are delighted that the high quality work our talented artists produce and the positive contribution we make to the arts has been recognised.’

Colin Tweedy from Arts & Business added: “The arts in this country could not survive without the passionate support of thousands of people who generously give their time, expertise and money to help our cultural organisations flourish through difficult times. “Over the past three years we have celebrated more than 200 champions who have given their support and passion to their local cultural landscape.

Other notable organisations involved in the award included Brewin Dolphin and Osborne Clarke. PHOTO CAPTION: Bruton School for Girls Headmistress Nicola Botterill with Head of Art Brian Wyatt receive Cultural Champion Award on behalf of the School
